View publication →My doctoral research developed the concept of Blue Green Placemaking. Blue Green Placemaking brings together flood risk mapping, blue green infrastructure, Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD), placemaking and participatory planning to explore how environmental interventions can contribute to more liveable, inclusive and flood-resilient urban environments. The research demonstrated how integrating environmental resilience with community knowledge and place-based thinking can support more holistic approaches to planning, helping create places that are better for both people and nature.
These principles continue to inform my professional work across planning, regeneration, placemaking, climate resilience and community engagement, bridging research, policy and practice to support more sustainable and resilient places.

The research has received external recognition, including an award-winning PhD video, Placemaking and Blue Green Infrastructure for Multiple Benefits, recognised through the Buildings & Cities Video Challenge 2024. The first journal paper from this research was also shortlisted for the RTPI Early Career Research Awards for Research Excellence, recognising its contribution to planning research.
This research examined how planning systems in England and Scotland respond to development pressures affecting historic battlefields and their associated cultural heritage values.
The study explored the effectiveness of planning approaches in protecting battlefield landscapes, considering the relationship between heritage value, development pressures and spatial planning decision-making.
